Powering aviation with seaweed innovation
A third-generation feedstock for a defossilized future
MacroCarbon seaweed is a true third-generation feedstock.
Our ocean-based cultivation model requires no arable land, no freshwater, and no fertilizers, enabling scalable growth without competing with food systems or terrestrial ecosystems.
Revolutionizing open-ocean macroalgae cultivation
Our modular, autonomous offshore farms are designed for rapid deployment and industrial-scale expansion, with the potential to scale to 6 km² and beyond.
Unlike conventional biomass production, our cultivation system is actively regenerative — enhancing marine ecosystems, supporting biodiversity, and contributing to ocean restoration.
As a third-generation feedstock, our model is both more economical and more sustainable than land-based biomass alternatives.
From Sea to Sky: Our innovative pathway to SAF
Our integrated platform matches selected native brown seaweed species to optimal growing conditions, tailored processing pathways, and specific offtake requirements from advanced industries.
Designed for replication, our model can be deployed globally in coastal regions seeking to develop resilient blue bioeconomy hubs.
We produce carbon-negative products, including biochar, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and bio-based fertilizers (biostimulants). Our mission is to accelerate global defossilization while ensuring long-term carbon sequestration.
Enabling Climate-Resilient Blue Economies
Our system strengthens local economies by diversifying income streams and creating scalable blue economy hubs along coastlines worldwide.
By de-risking large-scale ocean biomass production, we offer a stable and sustainable alternative to increasingly volatile land-based crops.
IP for sustainable industries, traditional ocean livelihoods, and regenerative practices alike
MacroCarbon’s methods and infrastructure are designed to be flexible and adaptable to various local conditions and livelihoods. They complement existing ocean infrastructure, traffic, and fisheries while enhancing their productivity and ability to contribute to sustainable local industries. Our approach also helps remediate waters affected by runoff and provides habitat for marine life.
On track to be a key player of the fast growing blue economy ecosystem in the East Atlantic
Macrocarbon is proud to be based in the Marine Science and Technology Park in Gran Canaria, a center of excellence for the marine and maritime sectors from where our team of scientist and engineers can unleash enable the next wave of blue growth across Europe and North and West Africa. But a thriving blue transition is beyond the capabilities of any one organization or company. That is why we are building an impressive roster of collaborations around the world, and across sectors.

WINNERS of the 2 Million EUR Carbon-to-Value Challenge
MacroCarbon was one of six teams funded with 600,000 euros in the first phase of the Carbon-to-Value Challenge from the German Federal Agency for Leapfrog Innovations (SPRIN-D). In 2023, MacroCarbon was one of three teams chosen to receive a further 2,300,000 euros during the second phase of the challenge.
Funded by CDTI — NEOTEC Mujeres Program
MacroCarbon has been awarded funding through the NEOTEC Women Program by the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI), under the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities of Spain, for its pioneering project on seaweed cultivation and transformation into sustainable fuels and bioproducts.
This CDTI-cofunded project aims to develop proprietary technologies for large-scale floating seaweed farming and to convert this biomass into advanced biofuels such as SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel), bionaphtha, biochar, and high-value natural compounds (Ulvan, cellulose, protein).
The scope includes the validation of an intermediate-scale prototype (PLAQUAFARM), optimization of conversion processes, and integration of sustainable solutions that contribute to a blue and circular economy, with focus on decarbonizing transport and valorizing waste streams.
